Earth Eagle Brewings (North)

Earth Eagle Brewings has been brewing and serving craft beer in downtown Portsmouth since 2012. Off the beaten path (just a short walk from Market Square), the original brewpub boasts a private beer garden, outrageous burgers and hot dogs, wine, and cocktails. In early 2021, Earth Eagle Brewings opened a second location on Route 108 in Somersworth. Dubbed Earth Eagle North, it features a spacious taproom with food, cocktails, wine, and the full range of Earth Eagle beers, including their signature New England Gangsta, a West Coast-style IPA.

Owner/brewer Alex McDonald says, “We brew a healthy variety of beer styles from IPAs, lagers, sours, and stouts to Belgians, herbals, and porters. In Somersworth we offer Wednesday trivia nights, Thursday open mic nights, and live music most weekends.”

At the Portsmouth location, brewery merchandise (t-shirts, hats, hoodies, glassware, dog leashes, etc.) and homebrewing supplies are offered in a spacious shop at the front of the building. Marketing & Retail Manager Gretchen McDonald says, “We’ve gone big with merch offerings in the past year and it has been a hit. And of course, homebrew supplies are popular. Whether you’re making beer, wine, cider, kombucha or cheese, we have ingredients and equipment for creating great stuff at home.”

Leith Karate Academy

Bill Leith began his martial arts training in 1995 at Buzz Durkin’s Uechi Karate School in Atkinson, New Hampshire. In 2004 he began assisting with instruction of classes, shortly after becoming a full instructor at the school. He is a Sixth Degree Black Belt – Renshi. A Japanese term of respect, renshi indicates a polished instructor or expert. He is also recognized and certified as a Shihan, or master instructor, by Buzz Durkin’s Uechiryu Butokukai – the largest Uechiryu Karate organization in New England.

With 19 years of teaching experience, Leith has taught thousands of students of all ages. Besides teaching his regular classes he has also taught a multitude of seminars regarding self-defense, fitness, and bully-awareness for local schools and businesses.

“As a teacher, I want to see my students improve physically and mentally through their karate practice – while having fun,” says Leith. “I accomplish this through a goal-oriented program designed to keep students on track and focused.”

Leith teaches the Uechiryu style of karate, a traditional Okinawan martial art founded by Kanbun Uechi (1897-1948) based on the Chinese style Pangai-noon, which he learned from his teacher, Shushiwa. Uechiryu is an in-close fighting system that includes fluid blocking and striking with the development of a hardened, conditioned body.

“While the core Uechiryu Karate curriculum is the backbone of our program, people train in the martial arts for a variety of reasons, so I adapt my teaching style and classes to meet the needs of our students,” says Leith. “Along with development of self-defense skills, Uechiryu at our school is practiced to elevate the mental and spiritual well-being of the practitioner. Through training, the student will develop better focus and concentration, reduce stress, learn respect for others, and improve his or her overall health and fitness.”

Leith Karate Academy is located at 42 Dover Point Road, Unit L, in Dover. For more information call 603-460-5300 or go to leithkarate.com.
