100 years ago today in TRN

A long time ago in a galaxy very close to home – before there was social media or internet. Before there was television. Heck, before there was even radio – people learned what was happening through the newspaper. We thought it would be enlightening – and occasionally worth a chuckle – to dip way, way back in time and see what the news was. What the buzz was. What the scuttlebutt was – 100 years ago on this date. So, on occasion, we will hop aboard our virtual time machine and race back through the dusty, yellowing pages of time – and The Times.

Here’s what happened April 24, 1923:

From news pages:

“Two empty kegs which gave evidence of having recently contained whiskey, several flasks filled with whiskey, and six people fell into the hands of officers at 11 o’clock Monday night in the 2000 block of Kemp Boulevard. Arriving at the scene, the officers found a real gay party in progress. Two women and four men were found enjoying the night in loud talk and song. All of them were placed under arrest and lodged in jail.”

And

“A scientific test has now proven what Dr. Caldwell of Monticello asserted many years ago, that constipation will slow you up fully 25 percent. The test was made upon four men in prime of life who deliberately went without a bowel movement for four days.”

And

Report on Shrine Circus:

“Large & Morgner, two one-legged fellows, have been together since they were 14 years of age, doing some remarkable stunts in balancing that would test the strength of Goliath himself.”

And

City Council meeting report:

“Operating expense of the sixteen departments of city government for 1922 amounted to $270,377.40.”

From classified ads:

“WANTED: To exchange spectacles for carpenter work. Faith Optical Company. 815 Scott.

And

“N.L Williams, spiritualist, medium, and healer of rheumatism, tuberculosis, epileptic fits, blindness, deafness, stomach, kidney and spleen trouble, paralysis, venereal diseases, heart trouble, organic diseases, lameness, and all kind of other sicknesses and diseases. Phone 2467”

And

“Use Packard Stage Line. Fare 50 cents. Wichita Falls and Burkburnett every hour. Rain or Shine.”
