101st Division celebrates its legacy during Week of the Eagles

The 101st Airborne Division and Fort Campbell are celebrating their legacy during a weeklong event.

Starting Friday, the 101st Airborne Division and Fort Campbell will begin their annual Week of the Eagles, a week when current soldiers and veterans come together in Fort Campbell to celebrate what the 101st Division has done.

Here's what you need to know about the 101st Airborne Division's Week of the Eagles.

What is Week of the Eagles?

Week of the Eagles was first held in 1974 to honor the legacy and heritage of the 101st Airborne Division involving veterans, current Screaming Eagles and community members.

The first Commanding General, Maj. Gen. William C. Lee said that "the Division had no history, but that it had a “rendezvous with destiny”," the 101st Division said in a press release. "The division will continue to address the nation’s evolving security landscape, with the same level of professionalism, as it has for the past 80 years."

When is it?

Week of the Eagles 2023 starts on Friday, May 19 and will end Thursday, May 25, 2023.

What kind of events are they having?

Week of the Eagles will consist of competitive and "esprit de corps" events that will end with the recognition of being awarded the coveted Commander's Cup.

Some key events are:

  • May 19, 6:30 a.m.: Division Run. The 101st Division will conduct a large-scale run as a division encompassing several roads on the installation.

  • May 19, 11:30 a.m.: Boot Display of fallen service members since 9/11 represented at the 101st Division headquarters

  • May 20, 1:30 p.m.: Air Assault Demonstration and Static Display featuring a live demonstration of air assault tactics involving aircrafts and Soldiers

  • May 20, 5:30 p.m.: "The Girl Who Wore Freedom" film viewing with the film producer and a Q&A session at the end

  • May 22, 1 p.m.: Solider Recovery Unit Eagle Warrior Memorial Garden Rededication Ceremony, a rededication ceremony and unveiling of a memorial plaque

  • May 22, 2 p.m.: 101st Airborne Division Mass Reenlistment Ceremony at The Sabalauski Air Assault School, where more than 100 soldier will reenlist at once

  • May 23, 3 p.m.: Memorial Day Ceremony to honor the fallen soldiers at the 101st Airborne Division Headquarters

  • May 25, 9:30 a.m.: Division Review, the 101st Airborne Division will conduct a review ceremony involving a large number of soldiers at the division parade field. During the event, they will announce the winners of the division's Best Competition and Commander's Cup.

Can civilians come to the events?

Yes, civilians are more than welcome to attend the events.

Many events will take place outside, and you are encouraged to dress comfortably for the heat and outdoor activities.
