12 Best Beaches in San Diego

Let’s start big picture. What’s the vibe here?
A short 30-minute drive outside of downtown San Diego, this 1,750-acre oceanfront reserve promises sweeping ocean views. The reserve is dedicated to preserving its namesake tree, the Torrey Pine, and surrounding wildlife, but travelers and locals come for the miles of trails through pine forests and sandstone canyons and the 4.5-mile Torrey Pines State Beach.

Any standout features or must-sees?
It’s easy to spend several days taking in the desert landscapes, ocean views, and rugged cliffs, but if you want to maximize your time, hit the 2.5-mile Broken Hill trail for a moderate hike with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean. Was it easy to get around?
It's large but easy to navigate; read the signs, though, as difficulty varies. Those with mobility issues can enjoy four different trails at Torrey Pines. Our favorite of the four is the Discovery Trail, a 0.13-mile trail that winds along a coastal bluff. Parking and restrooms throughout the reserve are accessible.

All said and done, what—and who—is this best for?
Torrey Pines is no hidden secret, but there's a reason crowds flock here. The reserve is open 365 days a year, from sunrise to sunset, and all entering cars must pay an admission fee, which ranges from $10-$25 (or free with a California State Parks Vehicle Day Use Pass), depending on whether you park in the the North or South Beach parking lots.
