Even if you’re the type who balks at the thought of spending money on flowers when they’re just going to wilt, you’ve got to admit: There’s something delightful in being surprised by them. But with all of the flower delivery services out there, it can be hard to know which one to choose. And we’ve all been burned by a sad, half-dead arrangement. That’s why we researched the most popular companies that offered online ordering. If the reviews seemed solid, we sent bouquets from each to homes across the country. The very best blooms—where reality exceeded expectations—earned a spot as one of the PureWow100 best flower delivery services.
HOW OUR WINNERS WERE CHOSEN:
Once the flowers arrived, testers were asked to follow the company’s instructions for care, taking a photo once they were unboxed and put in a vase. Three days later, they took another photo, and after a week, they shared their honest review of the arrangement, based on its value, quality, longevity, scent and beauty. In calculating those scores, there are two things to note:
Value is based not on how cheap a bouquet is, but on what you get for the price. As a result, some pricier arrangements scored higher for value, simply because they included higher-quality, lusher arrangements and/or lived longer than expected, making it more worth the spend in our minds.
Scent is subjective here. Some people, particularly allergy sufferers, prefer arrangements that aren't particularly fragrant. Here, a brand that scored poorly often had an off-putting scent, like a vegetal-meets-mossy odor (and, in those cases, they didn't make it to our best-of list here). We noted in each review in an arrangement was particularly fragrant.

You might eyeroll when you hear “easiest to unbox” as an award category, but hear us out: During the pandemic, many families sent older relatives flowers when they couldn’t visit them in-person. But, according to one manager at an assisted living facility we spoke to, there was a huge downside—many companies packaged the flowers in boxes with so many zip ties that residents found difficult to open (particularly those struggling with arthritis). They’d often get damaged during unboxing. Not so with 1-800-Flowers. The arrangement was hand-delivered in a clear wrap, making it easy to unbox and enjoy right away. Plus, a full week later, they looked as lush as ever.

FTD is a floral industry juggernaut for a reason: They’ve got delivery down to a science. The site is easy to navigate (though you might find yourself paralyzed by indecision, as you stare down all of the options). You can search by occasion, birth month, milestone, flower type and color. That said, the tradeoff for convenience is that the arrangements themselves can feel a little generic. Our tester noted that a few blooms looked “tired” upon arrival and didn’t revive after being trimmed and put in fresh water. Still, they made for a delightful pop of color that livened up a dreary winter week.

H. Bloom prides itself on selling luxury arrangements, and its bouquets don’t disappoint. The tightly clustered blooms offer that wow factor you want from a delivery, with most arrangements at the perfect height for holiday centerpieces: large enough to make an impact, not so tall they block people’s faces at the table. (The arrangements are also best suited for next-day events, as our tester lamented that they started to wilt after three to four days.) But while they’re fresh, they’re a sight to behold, with every detail thoughtfully considered, down to the leaves wrapped tucked inside the base of the vase, so you don’t see the flowers’ stems.

You can choose between weekly, biweekly and monthly deliveries, and the flowers arrive in a sturdy box that protects them from damage during shipping. They don’t come with a vase, and you’ll have to do your own zhushing, but our tester didn’t mind—especially when the flowers looked as lush and vibrant on day seven as they did when they first arrived. The quality was on-point, though for $75, our tester noted that she wished the blooms themselves (a mix of roses and pink gerberas) were a bit more luxe.

If you want to instantly upgrade your Zoom background (and ensure that no one on the call can talk about anything else), treat yourself to an UrbanStems arrangement. Part of their Valentine’s Day Collection, The Juliet arrived in pristine condition, featuring a romantic mix of delphinium, lisianthus, free spirit roses and starry asters. They added color without being overwhelmingly pink-and-red, like many V-day bouquets, and the loose, airy arrangement lended an “oh, these flowers? Just picked them this morning from my exquisite (non-existent) garden” vibe. The flowers lasted a little less than a week, but if you're looking for something longer-lasting, you can order a dried arrangement for roughly the same price.

Rustic arrangements often have more of a quaint, homespun vibe; not so with Olive & Cocoa’s designs, which offer an elevated take on eco-friendly wooden vases. The company expertly combines colorful blooms with berries and textured foliage, so there’s plenty to take in (without any one flower overpowering the rest). But what we love most is how easy it is to care for: Unbox it, remove any bruised petals and set it wherever you’d like. Each flower has its own water capsule, so there’s no need to change out the water or feed it. It lasted about six days before the blooms started wilting. The flowers weren’t particularly fragrant, but our tester appreciated that they could be placed on a dining table and wouldn’t interfere with whatever they’re having for dinner.

If you’re looking for gorgeous arrangements that ripped right out of Pinterest, look no further. Farmgirl Flowers is known for its rustic, burlap-wrapped arrangements, but they also offer styles that come in vases, as well as uber-trendy preserved flowers you can enjoy for the long haul. Its Mini Valentine bouquet (shown) is no longer available, but the Back for Amour is another similar 360-degree arrangement, so it looks good from all angles. Our only complaint? Even trimmed down, the wide swath of blooms seemed to tip over easily in its vase. Once we traded out the vase for a more bottom-heavy design, all was well.

Teleflora is another great option for fuss-free unboxing; its bouquets are made by local florists and delivered perfectly arranged in the vase. We loved that the flowers came with a note revealing the local shop that made them, and the personal delivery made them feel extra special. After about five or six days, the arrangement started to droop, but given the price point—the Moonstruck Mercury Bouquet (shown), is no longer available, but try the Romantic Radiance Bouquet instead, which features similar blooms and ranges from $70 to $90, depending on size—it was one of the best values we encountered.

You want to support small businesses, but you don’t have time to wade through Yelp reviews to try to find a reliable florist in your best friend’s new town. And straight-up asking would kind of ruin the surprise. Well, look no further than Floom. The company acts as a directory of independent florists’ work, highlighting their creations rather than have them all create the same set of designs. When browsing, your best bet is to search by the shipping zip code to see what’s available in your area. Most designs are pretty traditional, making them almost guaranteed crowd-pleasers, even if you have no idea what flowers the recipient is into.

The hardest part about sending someone flowers is shelling out the cost—for something that often lasts a week and a half, max. If that’s been your hang up, opt for a bloom they can enjoy for months (perhaps years) to come. While we’ve tested a few potted plant delivery services, The Sill’s stood out for its quality upon arrival: The greenery was lush, healthy and virtually damage-free. Plus, despite orchids being notoriously finicky, the company’s straightforward instructions took the intimidation (and urge to over-water) out of caring for them.

When our tester received her arrangement—hand-delivered in a large white box, lined with tissue paper and 40ish blush pink roses sticking out—she was blown away. “I felt like a Kardashian at the receiving end of a romantic gesture—because I think the only time I'd seen so many roses at close range was in Kim's Insta stories.” The roses stood 26 inches tall, in an equally dramatic vase, making for a truly showstopping display. And they should, considering 40 roses of that caliber will set you back roughly $143. (It’s also worth noting that at this time, Flowerbx delivers to the Northeast and West coasts of the US, as well as throughout the European Union.)

For that person, a Bouqs Co. delivery is in order. While all of the companies featured offered some instructions for care, Bouqs Co. went a step further, explaining just how much to trim the stems to make the arrangement fit the bouquet perfectly, as well as other tips for keeping the flowers looking fresh longer. They worked—five days in, our editor raved they still looked great. (As an allergy sufferer, she also appreciated that the blooms weren’t super fragrant.)

Let’s be clear: At $299 for 16 roses, these blooms are a splurge. But you truly will have them for a full year. Venus et Fleur’s Eternity Roses don’t need to be watered—just gently dusted from time to time—and they’ll look every bit as fresh as the day they were trimmed. It seems like black magic; they’re not stiff or covered in a waxy coating to preserve them. Whatever it is, it’s working. Our tester was impressed with how incredible they smelled—to the point that she wondered if they were spritzed with a high-end perfume—and loved their immaculate arrangement. Price aside, another thing worth noting is that the flowers can’t be removed from their container, so it may be worth letting your giftee choose which box style they like before clicking “add to cart.”

For $39 (plus shipping, depending on where you live), you can send an array of blooms from a California farm to their door. Each week’s shipment varies, depending on what’s available, and it comes with a guide to each bit of greenery you received, as well as easy-to-follow tips for arranging them.
While one of the ranunculi arrived pretty battered, the rest in our kit looked great, especially after the first day, when all of the blooms started to open up. What we liked most, though, was the fun range of plants included, from towering larkspurs to rosemary to a whole head of kale.

If you want to send someone an arrangement that they'll rave about for weeks afterward, head straight to Pomp. All of the blooms come from family-owned farms in Quito, Ecuador, and Medellín and Bogotá in Colombia. The brand boldly claims their arrangements will wow you, and honestly, that's an understatement. The Solstice bouquet arrived looking Facetuned and Photoshopped, only this was real life, no filter. (And while it's currently sold out, we bet the Pink Valentine will arrive similarly.) Plus, it only got lovelier as the roses opened up over the next few days, with the arrangement staying lush for nine days straight.
