Easter is about rebirth and renewal – the emblem of which is of course, traditionally, the egg.

It was Cadbury who first created the modern chocolate Easter egg in 1875. Now, some 80 million eggs are sold year on year in the UK alone, to the delight of children and adults alike.

The treats we’ve included in this round up are for the most part traditional eggs but we have included some inspired variations on the theme.

Almost all of these offerings are milk or white chocolate – in our experience kids don’t go mad for dark chocolate because it’s bitter, which is quite strong on young taste buds. We have also included organic and vegan options as well as fair trade chocolatiers.

Obviously, taste is important – and we had lots of fun sampling all of the eggs, looking for depth of flavour and most simply, something truly moreish. But we also wanted to make sure that the eggs were exciting at first sight – bright, fun objects just waiting to be devoured. We wanted to see clever designs and for the chocolate to be well made and substantial in terms of physical makeup and flavour.

We hope we have catered for all bank balances, as our list includes eggs costing sub £5 and blow-the-budget options.

Easter eggs 2021: Best chocolatey creations to get delivered, from Percy the Pig to Oreo

Chococo milk chocolate dinosaur studded easter egg

This is easily the most beautifully rendered egg in the round-up, comprising of a glossy marbled shell that arrived in plastic-free packaging. Gently crack it open, and the real magic is revealed – dinosaurs and fossils embedded in the inner walls of the egg. Our tester was genuinely agog about how it was made. The chocolate, which is predominantly milk chocolate, was delicious, and the white chocolate is less sweet than you might be used to and not such a sugar hit. Given how gorgeous it was as an object, it felt a shame to eat it, but it was gone in the blink of an eye!

Montezuma clucky milk chocolate chick

There’s milk chocolate and then there’s Montezuma. This is a bold statement but we think this is the most delicious milk chocolate we’ve ever tasted. There’s a depth of flavour here that’s hard to put into words – relying on the cocoa rather than the sugar. All of the ingredients are organic, fair trade and the company is committed to supporting children’s welfare. The chick-shaped egg is weighty and sturdy, and it’s “walls” are gratifyingly thick. The same goes for the chocolate buttons which are included, which are more pounds than pennies in terms of thickness and weight. Brilliant value given how much it offers, Clucky is a brilliant choice.

Hotel Chocolat eggs and soldiers

This is such a brilliant idea – our tester was instantly engaged, delighted that her favourite teatime feast has been given a chocolatey reboot.

You’ve got five white chocolate ganache half eggs and five “yolk”-dipped chocolate truffle soldiers all arranged beautifully in one spread. These are really rich flavours, including hazelnut praline, so a little goes a long way. Our four-year-old tester loved to physically dip the soldiers into the ganache with a delighted, messy result!

This is the perfect Easter present for anyone – giver or receiver – who likes to be original, amusing and offbeat.

Waitrose milk chocolate hen with speckled eggs

This lovely chubby milk chocolate hen sits on top of three candy-shelled solid chocolate eggs. Our tester wondered if perhaps there were chicks inside the eggs but seemed satisfied with the chocolate which is lovely and mild, and made using Fairtrade sourced cocoa. We thought this looked and tasted much more expensive than it actually is – for a fiver this is a brilliant quality Easter treat.

Marks & Spencer giant white chocolate Percy pig

A massive hollow Percy with knobbly-bobbly sugary multi-coloured pants? You bet that this was an instant hit with both of our testers. Be warned, this is extremely sweet – it is made from white chocolate, and has a strawberry flavour running through, though it’s not much like sweets Percy is famous for. The shell is really thick, so this Percy will last and last!

Cadbury Easter egg gift hamper

There is one particular shade of purple so nostalgia-inspiring and synonymous with fun, it can only mean one thing – Cadbury’s. And you can’t really have an Easter without it – Cadbury did after all create the modern chocolate egg. This hamper covers so many bases – from main egg gifts to treats for Easter egg hunts: you’ve got Crème Eggs, Mini Eggs, three large Easter eggs and a packet of hollow smaller eggs in foil. This is a brilliant choice for big families or those who relish planning Easter egg hunts. There is something for everyone, and given how much is included we think the price is pretty reasonable, too.

Morrisons white chocolate inclusion egg

Just looking at this festival of sugar will be enough to send little ones into orbit. Embedded into the (yummy) white chocolate egg is a large helping of gooey, sugary sweets. Our five-year-old tester spent ages picking the sweets out and savouring them, so this egg is definitely a great option if you want to make it last.

Holland & Barrett mummy meagz vegan orange choccie easter egg

Vegan confectionary tends to get a bad rap, but we were impressed with this chocolate orange flavoured egg, which is also gluten free and boasts plenty of eco-friendly credentials including using RSPO-certified palm oil that doesn’t compromise wildlife. Obviously there is no milk used here, so the egg was fairly bitter, and quite full-on for younger children’s taste buds. Our 10-year-old tester loved this, however (and we did too).

Melt Chocolates large easter bunny

With genius bunny silhouette packaging that is completely plastic free, our tester fell in love with this egg before she’d even tasted it, not least because it rattles with the promise of goodies inside. The egg itself is made from rich milk chocolate which isn’t too sweet, and inside there are small spheres of crunchy chocolate to be found, which our tester liked to load onto a bit of the “shell” before devouring. The packaging is also designed to be decorated – our bunny now has glitter glue ears and inky love hearts all over it.

Pierre Marcolini little pink basket

How cute is this set up? We love this option which includes 12 miniature eggs and four animal shapes. It’s so playful and yet the taste is sophisticated – you’ve got chunky praline eggs and caramel animals and a lovely depth of flavour. We thought these were just perfect for tablescapes, sharing or for treasure hunts.

Reese’s peanut butter Easter egg

If your kid loves peanut butter, there is no better Easter egg than this one from Reese’s which is, along with the packaging, absolutely huge and arrives like a big orange explosion. The main egg is tasty but we think the smaller peanut butter eggs, of which there are three included, taste better. They are packed with peanut butter crème and are unspeakably moreish!

The verdict: Kids’ Easter eggs

Chococo’s Jurassic offering wins for the ingenuity of the design – how beautiful it is, how interesting and of course how tasty. This makes for a really thoughtful and unusual egg and we can’t think of anyone (adults included) who wouldn’t be delighted with this. A close second is Montezuma’s egg, because it is just the most moreish chocolate we’ve ever had.
