Titanic (1997)

Titanic somehow took a five-day romance aboard a doomed ocean liner and turned it into one of the most beautiful, sweeping love stories ever to grace the silver screen.

Pride and Prejudice (2005)

Jane Austen's classic novel is on every list of most-cherished books because the romance between Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy is simply unforgettable. So too is this beautiful 2005 big-screen adaptation.

The film tells the story of a prideful poor girl and a prejudiced rich dude who fall madly in love with each other even as every bone in their bodies protests. After endless twists and turns (and other romantic entanglements), they finally end up together — basically creating the template for every love/hate movie relationship thereafter.

Becoming Jane (2007)

Speaking of Pride and Prejudice, many historians now believe the novel was inspired by author Jane Austen's real-life forbidden romance in the 1790s.

Around the time she wrote the book, Austen penned a letter to a friend about dancing and flirting with a poor Irish lawyer named Tom Lefroy. There isn't much more to go on historically — other than an admission from Tom later in life that he had fallen in "boyish love" with the author — so this film fills in the blanks. And ooooooh, the feels. The movie turns Austen's passing mentions into a heart-wrenching romance you won't soon forget.

Shakespeare in Love (1998)

Great writers apparently make great subjects for romantic dramas. Shakespeare in Love gives William Shakespeare a relationship of his own — though this one is completely imagined.

This movie depicts Shakespeare as a struggling playwright/actor who is out of ideas and searching for a muse. That's when he meets Viola de Lesseps, an aspiring stage actress who loves Shakespeare's plays but must pose as a man to follow her dream because women aren't allowed to act. The two have an instant connection, and the comedy of errors that follows ends up inspiring Romeo and Juliet. Again, this love story isn't true, but it'll make you see Shakespeare's most famous play in a whole new light.

Dirty Dancing (1987)

"Nobody puts Baby in a corner" — and nobody could leave this film (with its iconic expression) off the list. Dirty Dancing charts the summer romance of a bad-boy dance instructor named Johnny and a well-off daddy's girl named Baby. Trust: Once you watch this movie, whenever you hear the synthy opening chords of "(I've Had) The Time of My Life," you'll run for the nearest buff dude and leap into his arms. Hopefully, he'll have seen this classic film, too, and know you're coming.

Love Actually (2003)

Many fans think of Love Actually as more of a Christmas movie, but seeing as how this flick follows eight interconnecting romances, I'm calling it a V-Day, or any day really, must-watch.

There are too many heart-squeezing moments to mention, from when young Sam rushes through an airport to say goodbye to his elementary-school crush before she flies across the ocean, to the moment Mark creepily professes his love for his best friend's wife through notecards. The movie examines love from all angles and is amazing.

The Fault in Our Stars (2014)

"OK?"

"OK."

OK, we're already sobbing.

How could a film turn such a simple, unromantic word into one of the most gut-wrenching expressions of love ever to be uttered on screen?

From the moment Hazel Grace Lancaster and Augustus Waters awkwardly make eye contact at their cancer support group, you know their connection is going to be uniquely poignant. And even though the cloud of Hazel's terminal diagnosis hangs over their budding romance throughout the story, the couple's innocent chemistry and witty banter nearly make you forget they're destined for a heartbreaking ending.
