11-year-old boy in custody after teen is seriously injured in Norfolk shooting, police say

An 11-year-old boy is accused of shooting and seriously wounding a teenager Sunday night in Norfolk, police said.

Officers responded to the 400 block of Nicholson Street, in the Young Terrace neighborhood, at 6:05 p.m. following a report of a gunshot victim. Police found a 17-year-old boy with a gunshot wound, and he was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Officers detained the 11-year-old at the scene, police spokesperson Will Pickering confirmed. Police have secured petitions from the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court to charge him with malicious wounding, use of a firearm, and possession of a firearm as a juvenile, according to Commonwealth’s Attorney Ramin Fatehi.

Pickering didn’t respond to a question about the relationship between the 11-year-old and the teen.

Fatehi declined to comment on whether the 11-year-old boy’s parents will be charged in relation to this shooting due to the ongoing investigation. The next step in the case will be to hold a competency hearing to determine whether the boy is fit to stand trial, Fatehi said.

“My office takes the case extremely seriously as it does with all violence,” the prosecutor said.

The child, whose name has not been released because he is a minor, will remain detained until he appears for a hearing within 72 hours of his arrest to determine whether he will be released.
