Howard Monroe reports.
- Story now. A gunman opens fire on two children as they ride a moped last night in northeast Philadelphia. And now an 11-year-old boy is dead. The shooting happened on the 1500 block of McKinley Street in Oxford Circle. Eyewitness News reporter Howard Monroe is live at police headquarters for us this morning with what investigators have uncovered so far. Howard.
HOWARD MONROE: Well, Jen, no one has been arrested in this case. And police say there are increasing patrols in Oxford Circle and elsewhere in the city until they can figure out exactly what is leading to the violence across the city. Now, as for this shooting, it happened last night on McKinnley Street in Oxford Circle at about 6:30.
Police say the 11 and 14-year-olds were on a moped when they were shot in an apparent drive-by shooting. The 11-year-old who was killed was shot in the neck. The 14-year-old was shot in the arm and ankle and is recovering at the hospital. Now, due to an uptick in violence across the city, Police commissioner Daniel Outlaw says they are now looking into what is leading up to these shootings.
DANIELLE OUTLAW: At this point, we don't know the motivation behind the shooting. We don't know if they were the intended targets, but our detectives are out here canvassing the block. We have detectives at the hospitals speaking to witnesses. And we are doing everything that we can to figure out as quickly as possible why these two boys were shot.
HOWARD MONROE: Now, as of midnight, 114 people have been shot and killed so far this year in the city of Philadelphia. That is 30% higher than this time last year. Live at police headquarters, Howard Monroe, "CBS 3" Eyewitness News.
