An 11-year-old Broward girl has died from COVID-19, health officials say

An 11-year-old Broward girl has died from the novel coronavirus, reports say. She is one of the youngest to die from the virus in the state.

On Thursday, data released from the Florida Department of Health showed the girl had died from the virus. Her name was not released, but health officials say her case was confirmed on July 2 and it was travel-related.

According to NBC 6 News, the Broward Medical Examiner’s Office records show the 11-year-old was Yansi Ayala. Her cause of death was from COVID-19 and she had other medical conditions such as heart disease, epilepsy, cerebral palsy and asthma.

She is the second 11-year-old to die from the virus in Florida, as last week health officials confirmed Daequan Wimberly, 11, had died from the virus in Miami-Dade County.

As of Thursday, the state has recorded a total of 16,012 children under the age of 18 confirmed to have had the disease, according to state case line data.

While most COVID-19 cases among children are not severe, with many kids being asymptomatic or experiencing mild symptoms, health officials are also concerned about the development of multi-system inflammatory syndrome, or MIS-C.

The disease is believed to be connected to COVID-19, the CDC says, and has been described as “inflammation [swelling] across multiple body systems,” including the heart, lungs, kidneys, brain, skin, eyes and gastrointestinal organs.”

Health officials say 13 children have had MIS-C.
