11-year-old girl killed, others hurt in Saturday crash in Woodbury

WOODBURY - An 11-year-old girl was killed in a four-car crash on Route 6 in Woodbury over the weekend.

More than half a dozen other people were hurt in the crash, which state police said happened around 8:30 p.m. Saturday.

According to New York State Police, a preliminary investigation found a 2020 Honda Accord driven by Yeraldo Roa, 34, of Port Jervis was going west on Route 6 when he crossed into the eastbound lane of traffic and struck two cars on their passenger sides: a 2019 Infiniti SUV and a 2017 Nissan N20. Roa's vehicle then continued moving west in the eastbound lane and struck a Honda Odyssey head-on.

Roa and an 11-year-old girl, who was a passenger in his car, were taken by ambulance to Garnet Health Medical Center in Middletown, where the girl was pronounced dead from her injuries. She has not been identified by police.

Roa was treated for facial injuries, broken bones and possible internal injuries. The driver of the Infiniti, Michael Escalera, 43, of the Bronx, and his three passengers, who were not identified, suffered minor injuries. They were taken to Garnet by ambulance for evaluation and then released.

The driver of the Honda Odyssey, Marco Espinoza Chaves, 38, of the town of Monroe, and his passengers were taken by ambulance to Montefiore St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Police did not say how many passengers were in that vehicle.

The driver of the Nissan, Eric Schaper, 60, of the city of Peekskill, was not hurt.
