Photos: 12 new Florida specialty plates ready to hit the road
Twelve new specialty and military license plates, including plates for nine Black fraternities and sororities dubbed the “Divine 9,” are now available.

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles on June 2 announced the new plates, which also include “Explore Off-Road Florida,” “America the Beautiful,” and the military-services tag “Army of Occupation.”

The plates are being delivered to tax collector offices and license-plate agencies, the department said in a news release.
The Army of Occupation plate is for Florida residents who, while serving in the U.S. military during the Cold War, were assigned to specific overseas locations between May 9, 1945, and October 2, 1990.

The Explore Off-Road Florida plate will benefit the Florida Off-Road Foundation, Inc., and the American the Beautiful tag will raise money for the America the Beautiful Fund, which offers youth programs and assistance to members of the military community.
The Divine 9 tags are for members of Alpha Phi Alpha, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, Delta Sigma Theta, Phi Beta Sigma, Zeta Phi Beta, Sigma Gamma Rho and Iota Phi Theta.

A 2021 law required most plates to reach 3,000 pre-sales before manufacturing would begin and to maintain that minimum number of sales to remain on the road. A bill (SB 364) that lawmakers approved this year, if approved by Gov. Ron DeSantis, would reduce the overall number of specialty plates that could be available at a time from 150 to 135 and make other changes.
