12-year-old among two who drowned on same day off same Virginia beach, cops say

A young swimmer was among two people found dead after vanishing on the same day off the same stretch of beach in Virginia, officials said.

Zamari Wilson, 12, reportedly was on a trip to the coast when he went missing in the water on Sunday, July 3. He disappeared near the Delta Marriott hotel on Shore Drive in Virginia Beach, where his family had been staying for the Fourth of July weekend, officials told WTKR.

While the Virginia Beach Police Department didn’t share the boy’s identity with McClatchy News, officers in a news release said they received a call that a child had gone missing at about 10:30 a.m. About three hours into the search, he was found and was pronounced dead.

The 12-year-old’s death was one of two reported over the Fourth of July weekend near Shore Drive, which runs along the Chesapeake Bay.

Just after 4 p.m., officials reported being called to a person “struggling in the water.” The man, a 44-year-old Virginia Beach resident, was with friends when he disappeared about 1 mile away from where the boy drowned, according to WAVY.

Police, who also didn’t share the man’s name, said his body was found at about 5 p.m.

The U.S. Coast Guard, which reportedly helped in the search, didn’t immediately respond to McClatchy News’ requests for additional information on July 4.
