12-year-old charged with murder after shooting of Sonic employee in Texas: police

A 12-year-old boy has been charged with murder following the shooting death of a Sonic Drive-In employee in Texas, officials said.

The minor, who has not been named publicly, allegedly “fired multiple shots” during an incident Saturday night in Keene, according to local police.

The employee, 32-year-old Matthew Davis, had confronted the child’s group because a Fort Worth man, 20-year-old Angel Gomez, was acting “disorderly” in the parking lot, the Keene Police Department said.

“The argument soon became physical,” police said. “During the altercation, a juvenile also of Ft. Worth and a passenger in the suspect’s vehicle, retrieved a firearm and fired multiple shots, striking the victim.”

Gomez, who was also charged with murder, fled the scene with the minor, police said. Gomez later returned and was taken into custody, while police found the minor at a home in nearby Rio Vista. Several firearms were recovered from the home, according to officials.

Davis was flown to the Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth, where he died, police said. Keene is about 30 miles south of Fort Worth.

The minor is believed to have fired six rounds from an assault rifle, Keene Police Chief James Kidd told the Daily News.

An online fund-raiser to support Davis’ family has raised more than $13,000. Davis was the father of a 10-year-old boy, according to the GoFundMe page.

“It is imperative that we come together to support [Davis’ mother, Leigh Anne] during this unimaginable time of loss,” reads the fund-raiser, which was set up by coworkers of the victim’s mom. “Please consider donating any amount to help ease the financial burden for the final arrangements that this horrific act of violence has caused.”
