12-year-old girl shot in DC among those charged in man’s murder

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — The same day that someone shot a 12-year-old girl in Northwest D.C., police arrested her for helping to murder a man. Two other girls were also charged in the man’s killing.

The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) said the shooting took place in the 500 block of Peabody St. NW around 3:30 a.m. on Friday. The 12-year-old girl was hit in the leg.

A source told DC News Now that the 12-year-old girl was involved in the death of 64-year-old Reggie Brown of Northwest last year and was taken into custody hours after she was shot.

Shortly before 1 p.m., MPD posted on X that it arrested three girls for a murder that happened in Northwest on Oct. 17, 2023. Police received a report around 1 a.m. that day that a man was on the ground in the 6200 block of Georgia Ave. NW. When officers arrived, they found Brown hurt. His injuries indicated he had been assaulted. Brown died there.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined that Brown died as a result of blunt force trauma and that someone killed him.

Police arrested a 13-year-old girl on Thursday, March 28, 2024 in connection to Brown’s murder. Then, on March 29, MPD said it arrested another 13-year-old girl as well as a 12-year-old girl in connection to the killing.

Within hours of police releasing the information about the girls’ arrests, DC News Now confirmed that the 12-year-old who was in custody for Brown’s murder was the same girl who was shot in the leg Friday morning.

Arlene Bowie, who lives in the apartment adjacent to where the girl was shot, said that she just saw the young girl the day before she was shot. A single father, she said, lives in that apartment where the shooting occurred.

“They’re not being supervised with their mothers, their parents, and the ones who are supervising them, they come in and live in the home and they go somewhere else and this what happens,” she said. “They raise [themselves].”

One witness, who did not want to gave their name, was walking his dog when the shooting of the girl happened. They said that they saw two men running down Peabody Street.

“It’s crazy because maybe we live two or three blocks from a police station,” the witness said.

Scott Wallace, who lives near the house where the shooting happened, has been troubled by the violence and drug dealing he’s seen in the Brightmore neighborhood.

“We need to do something in our neighborhoods to make it safer and better for everyone,” he said.
