13 things to do this week in the Canandaigua area

You may have to eat lightly and stretch out if you want to tackle all that's happening in the Canandaigua area this week.

All sorts of activities await residents of and visitors, from art to education to local history to music and more.

Here’s a sampling of what’s happening this week.

1. “How I See It: The Artist’s Eye”

An opening reception will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 18, in the Ewing Community Room Art Gallery at Wood Library, 134 N. Main St., Canandaigua. The works of Nancy Yacci of Canandaigua will be on exhibit through June 2.

2. Create a bird-friendly community

Chris Lajewski, director of the Montezuma Audubon Center, will explain how to create healthy habitats and ensure safe spaces for birds during a program at 6 p.m. April 18 at Victor Farmington Library, 15 W. Main St., Victor. Visit www.victorfarmingtonlibrary.org for more information.

3. Learn about the West Bloomfield General Store

Alicia and Todd Campbell will present early photos and history of this town landmark in the free event at 7 p.m. April 18 at the West Bloomfield Historical Society, 8966 state Routes 5 and 20, West Bloomfield. 4. Victor Farmington Library book sale at Eastview Mall

The four-day Friends of the Victor Farmington Library book sale starts from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 20, at Eastview Mall, near entrance 4. Hours for the rest of the sale are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 21; 1 to 7 p.m. April 22; and 1 to 4 p.m. April 23.

5. Memories of Holocaust shared

Holocaust survivor Warren Heilbronner's talk at 12:45 p.m. Thursday, April 20, is part of the History, Culture and Diversity series organized by Robert Brown, professor of history. The event, which will be held in the Finger Lakes Community College main campus auditorium, is free and open to the public. It will also be broadcast live on Finger Lakes Television, Roku, fingerlakestv.org and the college’s main Facebook and YouTube accounts.

6. Gray squirrels and cities

Associate professor of biology Brad Cosentino will present “Urban Evolution: How Cities Are Changing Our Wildlife” from 6 to 7 p.m. April 20 at Wood Library, 134 N. Main St., Canandaigua. Cosentino will present research on one of the most common and visible animals in cities, gray squirrels, as part of the Hobart and William Smith Colleges speaker forum. 7. Geneva High School Drama Club’s “Talking With …"

Three blackbox theater performances are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 21, and Saturday, April 22, and 2 p.m. Sunday, April 23, at Geneva Middle School. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students and can be purchased at the door.

8. Walking Ontario County Courthouse tours

Beginning at 2 p.m. April 21 and continuing every other Friday until July 28, participants can embark on one-hour tours that start at the Ontario County Historical Society and highlight the Ontario County Courthouse and notable people and events from county history. 9. Benefit barbecue to help Canandaigua group resettle refugees

Called to Care, Canandaigua is having a benefit chicken barbecue from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 22, at King's Catering, 4031 state Routes 5 and 20 East, Canandaigua. Meals for $15 will include half chicken, salt potatoes, macaroni salad and roll. Proceeds will benefit the organizations mission of welcoming and resettling refugees in Canandaigua.

10. Albert Cummings brings the blues to Canandaigua

Blues artist Albert Cummings will perform at 7:30 p.m. April 22 at Fort Hill Performing Arts Center, 20 Fort Hill Ave., Canandaigua. Mezzanine tickets are $35; orchestra $25. Tickets can be purchased online at forthillpac.com or by calling the box office at 585-412-6043.

11. "Elizabeth Bishop and the Art of Losing” screening

The Finger Lakes Community College student club is hosting a screening of the documentary on the life of Pulitzer prize-winning poet Elizabeth Bishop and her poem "One Art." The event, which is 4 to 7 p.m. April 19 in FLCC's main campus auditorium, marks National Poetry Month and will include remarks by the director of the film, John D. Scott, a critically acclaimed filmmaker who is also a professor at Ithaca College. Admission is $8 for the general public. The screening is free to all FLCC students, faculty and staff.

12. Canandaigua native talks about China

Michael O’Hanlon will speak on “China Rising: A New Multipolar World Order” as part of the George M. Ewing Canandaigua Forum speaker series at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 23, at Fort Hill Performing Arts Center, 20 Fort Hill Ave., Canandaigua. A Canandaigua native, O’Hanlon is a senior fellow in foreign policy at the Brookings Institution. Tickets are $25; students may purchase tickets at the door for $10 with student ID. 13. Earth Day celebration

The First Congregational Church of Canandaigua is hosting an Earth Day celebration from 10 a.m. to noon April 22 at the church, 58 N. Main St., Canandaigua. Members of the Canandaigua Lake Watershed Association will provide information on lake-friendly living, free seeds for gardens will be given away, T-shirt art will be demonstrated by artist Judi Cermak, tree saplings will be given away and more events are planned.
