13 arrested at Tennessee football vs. Alabama – no mustard bottles involved

Tennessee fans had their share of fun Saturday night. The crime logs prove it.

Neyland Stadium became a sea of orange as fans stormed the field after a down-to-the-second win for the Vols against Alabama.

There were nine arrests and 39 ejections during the upset at Neyland Stadium, University of Tennessee Police Department Public Information Officer Lola Alapo told Knox News.

According to the UTPD Crime Log, there were:

  • 22 liquor law violations, resulting in stadium ejections

  • 13 disorderly conduct violations, resulting in stadium ejections

  • 5 public intoxication charges, resulting in arrests

  • 1 simple assault and public intoxication, resulting in arrest

  • 1 criminal trespass charge, resulting in arrest

  • 1 simple possession charge and warrant served, resulting in arrest

  • 1 assault charge, resulting in arrest

There were four additional arrests around the stadium that evening, according to unofficial numbers from the Knoxville Police Department, for:

  • Public intoxication

  • Disorderly conduct, public intoxication and adult contributing to the delinquency of a minor

  • Domestic assault and underage alcohol consumption

  • Resisting arrest and simple assault

Hopping the wall to the field, Tennessee fans managed to tear down both goal posts after the Vols beat Alabama 52-49 with a field goal.

One Knox County Sheriff's officer caught in the commotion was hit in the head with a bottle and had to get staples at the hospital.

Some pieces of the goal posts made it home with fans, and others ended up at fraternity houses or in the Tennessee River.

And despite Tennessee and Neyland Stadium being smoke-free, fans and athletes lit up after the win, as is Third Saturday in October tradition.

Tennessee was fined $100,000 by the SEC for fans storming the field. Last year it was fined $250,000 after fans tossed trash on the field to protest an officials' call during the Ole Miss game.

Now it's Homecoming Week on Rocky Top, and Tennessee's opponent UT Martin has suggested hosting the game to give UT some time to find a solution to the goal post dilemma.
