13 Coronavirus Deaths, 897 New Cases In Alameda County Wednesday

ALAMEDA COUNTY, CA — The Alameda County Public Health Department reported Wednesday that another 13 people have died of complications from COVID-19, while 897 newly confirmed cases of coronavirus were reported. That brings the county death toll to 776, and the total cases to 62,943.

The sobering news comes on a day when the state issued new guidance ordering the vaccination of all residents age 65 and over in an effort to protect those most vulnerable.

"There is no higher priority than efficiently and equitably distributing these vaccines as quickly as possible to those who face the gravest consequences," Gov. Gavin Newsom said in a statement. "Individuals 65 and older are now the next group eligible to start receiving vaccines. To those not yet eligible for vaccines, your turn is coming. We are doing everything we can to bring more vaccine into the state."

Meanwhile, a vote is expected Friday morning by the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Authority on whether to set up a mass vaccination clinic at the Coliseum.

Similar mass vaccination sites have already opened, on Monday in San Diego at Petco Park and at Disneyland on Wednesday, with some 3,000 people per day getting vaccinated at each site. More than 10,000 have signed up for appointments to get their shots.

A vaccination clinic is supposed to open no later than Friday at Dodger Stadium, with more sites in the works for L.A. County.

Back here in Alameda County, thousands of residents have filled out an "Alameda County Resident Vaccine Notification Form" online. According to the form, "We will notify you when a vaccine is available and send you information with details on location and timing."
