'13 the Musical' on stage at John Waldron and more things to do this weekend

Bloomington's rich cultural scene is tempting you out with a performance by the Jewish Theatre of Bloomington and a Winter Wonderland celebration at the Banneker Community Center. Take a break from shopping at College Mall to listen to the Bloomington Community Band play holiday favorites or get something unique for that hard-to-shop for person on your list by visiting an artist open house in Brown County.

Evan Goldman has just moved from New York City to Indiana and he's getting ready to celebrate his Bar Mitzvah in the high-energy musical comedy "13 the Musical." Broadway's iteration was the first ever to be made up entirely of teenage performers. The Jewish Theatre of Bloomington will stage their version at 7 p.m. Dec. 8, 2 and 7 p.m. Dec. 10 and 2 p.m. Dec. 11 in the John Waldron Arts Center auditorium. Community Band plays in College Mall

Get in the holiday spirit and do a little shopping at 1 p.m. Dec. 10 in College Mall when the Bloomington Community Band will perform Christmas music and other holiday favorites to make your spirit bright.

Advent organ recital Friday afternoon

Marilyn Keiser will present an Advent organ recital at Trinity Episcopal Church, 111 S. Grant St., at 1:15 p.m. Dec. 9.  The program, sponsored by the Friday Musicale, will feature music by Guilmant, Gordon Young, Franz Liszt and Henri Mulet. She will be assisted by flutist Frances Shelly. The concert is free and open to the public.

Winter Wonderland celebration at Banneker on Saturday

Children and their families are invited to the Winter Wonderland celebration from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Banneker Community Center, 930 W. Seventh St. The free event will have seasonal activities including arts and crafts, cookie decorating, holiday carols, free photos with Santa and a toy giveaway.

Winter Wonderland is sponsored by the Black Graduate Student Association at Indiana University Bloomington, the city’s Commission on the Status of Black Males, Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department’s Banneker Community Center, and the Sigma Kappa Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc.

Artist open house on Saturday

From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, five local artists will join together to bring new artwork, handcrafted holiday decorations and one-of-a-kind holiday gifts to a one location: Sleepy Cat Studio at 4687 Yellowwood Road in Brown County.

The studio, created from an old grain bin, is a wonderland of artwork, both inside and out, and worth a visit. Artists will be studio owner and artist Monique Cagle, selling handcrafted fabric animals, jewelry, paintings, fiber art and painted glass; Amy Greely, nature-inspired jewelry; Rosey Bolte of The Uncommon Gourd, hand-painted folk art gourds; Dixie Ferrer, original mixed media paintings, journals and bookmarks; and Michele Heather Pollock of Lost Lake Studio, stitched paper bookmarks, ornaments and forest-inspired framed artwork.

Extra, extra, coming soon: Straight No Chaser

Straight No Chaser will perform at 8 p.m. Dec. 16 at the IU Auditorium as part of the group's 25th anniversary celebration. Tickets start at $29 for IU Bloomington students, and $39 for the general public. Individual tickets may be purchased online at IUauditorium.com, in person at the IU Auditorium Box Office, as well as through Ticketmaster.com.
