13-year-old on bicycle dies in collision with SUV at a Boynton Beach intersection

BOYNTON BEACH — A teenager died in suburban Boynton Beach after an SUV collided with his bicycle on Wednesday evening.

Blake Buchbinder, 13, was riding his bicycle in a crosswalk at the intersection of Boynton Beach Boulevard and Lyons Road, "crossing against the traffic signals," according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office.

The report said Buchbinder was going north when he traveled in front of a Ford Escape that was moving west on Boynton Beach Boulevard. A violent crash ensued, and the teenager was pronounced dead at 5:52 p.m.

The next day, an online fundraiser to support Buchbinder's family raised more than $45,000 in just seven hours.

"In his short time with us, Blake touched the lives of many with his infectious laughter, crazy jokes, kindness, and zest for life and all things sports," the GoFundMe organizer said.

The sheriff's report does not indicate that any charges are pending against the driver of the Escape, listed as a 61-year-old woman from Okeechobee. She was wearing a seat belt, and there is no evidence to suggest she was under the influence at the time of the crash, PBSO said.

The report does not say how fast the Escape was traveling at the time of the wreck.
