13-year-old boy is dead after house fire south of Wilmington

A 13-year-old boy has died of injuries sustained in a fire in the historically African American community of Dunleith, just south of Wilmington, on Friday afternoon.

State fire investigators are still investigating the origin and cause of the fire as of Saturday morning, said Delaware State Fire Marshal spokesman Michael Chionchio. The name of the victim has not been released.

The fire was reported just before 12:30 p.m. on the block of 400 Robinson Drive in the historic Dunleith development. When firefighters from the nearby Minquadale Fire Company arrived, flames were already "engulfing the one-story home," the fire marshal's office reported.

Firefighters were able to enter the home and deliver the young victim to Emergency Medical Services and the New Castle County Paramedics, but attempts to resuscitate were not successful, and the victim was pronounced dead upon arrival at Nemours Children's Hospital in Rockland.

No other injuries from the fire were reported yesterday. Estimated fire damage totals $200,000.
