13-year-old boy taken to Pittsburgh hospital after a shooting in Erie on Tuesday night

Erie police detectives are hunting for surveillance video and other evidence as they attempt to determine what led to a shooting in an eastside neighborhood on Tuesday night that injured a 13-year-old boy.

The boy went to UPMC Hamot after he was shot in the mouth and was later transferred to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, according to Erie police.

The boy was last known to be in stable condition and is expected to survive, Erie police Deputy Chief Rick Lorah said Wednesday.

Police had no suspects in the shooting Wednesday.

The shooting was reported on Tuesday at about 9 p.m. Officers were initially called to the 400 block of East 22nd Street on a report of a shooting, but they soon learned that the shooting had taken place in the 300 block of East 28th Street, Lorah said.

While officers were heading to the scene, they learned that the boy had gone to UPMC Hamot, Lorah said. Officers went to the hospital and made contact with the boy and his mother, he said.

The boy told police he heard gunshots and felt something hit his face, and he realized that he had been shot, according to Lorah.

Investigators believe the boy was shot while he was inside a vehicle, Lorah said. Officers found the vehicle in the 300 block of East 28th Street, and evidence suggests the vehicle was struck by gunfire, he said.

Police towed the vehicle from the scene.

Officers also found several spent shell casings in the 300 block of East 28th Street.

Lorah said police did not get a lot of cooperation from witnesses who were at the scene on Tuesday night.

"We're still attempting to tie together the events that led to the shooting," Lorah said.

Detectives are searching for surveillance video from security cameras in the area. Lorah said police are asking anyone in the area of the 300 block of East 28th Street who might have surveillance video shot between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Tuesday that might show anything to call Detective Sgt. Matthew Berarducci at 814-870-1221.

The boy is the seventh person shot in Erie so far this year, according to city police.

Police on Wednesday were also investigating a shooting that was reported in the area of East Seventh Street and Hess Avenue shortly after midnight.

Officers were sent to the area after callers reported hearing five to seven gunshots, and they found and recovered spent casings in the 1400 block of Lynn Street, Lorah said.

Officers also found a residence on Lynn Street with bullet holes in a top-floor bedroom window, Lorah said.

No one was reported injured in the shooting.

The shooting was the latest of several reported shootings in the 1400 block of Lynn Street over the past several months in which a house was damaged by gunfire.

Erie police also investigated shootings on the block on Aug. 17, Sept. 27 and Dec. 17, according to previous police reports. It was unknown Wednesday if all of the shootings involved the same house.
