13-year-old found dead in 10 feet of water after drowning at Washington lake, cops say

A 13-year-old boy drowned at a Washington lake and two other children were rescued, authorities said.

The teen’s body was found Sunday, June 26, in 10 feet of water in the swimming area at Lake Stevens in Snohomish County, Snohomish Regional Fire and Rescue said in a news release.

Rescuers responded to the drowning around 5:43 p.m.

When first responders got to the lake, there were about 100 people at the park, officials said.

Onlookers had pulled a 12-year-old boy and 15-year-old girl from the lake when rescuers got to the scene, fire officials said.

They performed CPR and took the children to a hospital where they were listed in critical condition, fire officials said.

The 13-year-old was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, fire officials said.

No one was wearing a life jacket at the lake, officials said.

“Wearing a life jacket is the best action anyone can do to prevent drowning. I (can’t) think of a time where water rescue crews have ever pulled a person wearing a life jacket from 10 feet of water. Because life jackets work and keep you above the water,” Snohomish Regional Fire and Rescue spokesperson Peter Mongillo told McClatchy News.

Mongillo also said the water was cold.

“Although air temperature can swing quickly, water temperatures do not. And most all of Washington state bodies of water remain extremely cold year round,” he said in an email.

Lake Stevens is about 36 miles north of Seattle.
