13-year-old found dead after boat capsizes during fishing trip with dad, Utah cops say

A 13-year-old boy was found dead in a Utah lake Saturday, about 36 hours after a boat he was in with his dad capsized, officials say.

The father and son had been fishing with a friend on Fish Lake, when they dropped the friend off at 3:30 a.m. Friday. They then went back out to fish more, but sometime before 8 a.m. their boat capsized, according to the Sevier County Sheriff’s Office

Fisherman heard “someone yelling for help” before finding the boy’s father and helping him get to shore, Sheriff Nathan Curtis said.

The father’s 13-year-old son was not immediately found during the search, which continued until Saturday night with help from divers and a sonar boat, according to the sheriff.

At 8:30 p.m. Saturday, the 13-year-old boy’s body was recovered in the lake, the sheriff said. His identity has not been publicly released.

The boy’s father was taken to Levier Valley Hospital, where he was “treated for exposure and hypothermia.”

Fish Lake is about 115 miles south of Salt Lake City.
