If you have been holding off on buying comfortable footwear because you can't decide on a style or the prices just haven't been right, you can now shop podiatrist-recommended shoes thanks to holiday deals. And with Black Friday around the corner, Amazon and Nordstrom did everyone a solid and just released thousands of new discounts where you can save up to 55 percent on best-sellers including the Nike React Running Shoes or New Balance Sneakers.
However, with so many markdowns, the process for finding the right pair that are worth your dollars can be daunting. To help with your search, Shape interviewed podiatrists for their recommendations and curated a special list. (Related: The 10 Best Sneakers for Standing All Day, According to Podiatrists)
What makes a shoe podiatrist-approved? For starters, it should provide comfort and support through a sturdy sole and cushy footbed, says Afsaneh Latifi, D.P.M., a certified podiatrist based in New York. Latifi adds that each pair must fit properly. "People do not get the right size since feet change over time and one foot is usually bigger than the other."
When looking for a supportive shoe, you'll also want to check for thickness in the arch. "The thicker the arch, the more supportive," Hillary Brenner, D.P.M., New York City-based podiatrist previously told Shape. She notes that the shoe should also be semi-rigid and not too flexible, because it helps with foot balance and guides the feet through movement.
