Of the books that have been banned or removed from school library shelves in Florida, a surprising number have been made into TV shows, bingewatching series or movies.

In September 2023, the Florida Department of Education released a hefty list of books removed from school library shelves last year. In Florida, there were 386 book removals from 1,218 total objections last year, according to the Tallahassee Democrat. Clay County had the most book removals with 177, followed by Martin County with 98 and Manatee County with 25 books removed, the Democrat reported.

Sometimes, even the authors voiced their opinions about book removals in Florida schools.

When bestselling author James Patterson learned his "Maximum Ride" series was pulled from Martin County school libraries in the spring, he responded in a USA TODAY story: "If you are going to ban this book, then no kids under 12 should go to any Marvel movies." Patterson lives in Palm Beach County and owns a home in Martin County.

Judy Blume, a legendary author in the young adult genre who lives in Key West, Florida, discussed book bans and removals in her “Judy Blume Forever” documentary on Amazon. Blume’s bestseller “Forever” was pulled from Martin County library shelves. “I was accused of all kinds of evil-doing,” Blume says in the 2023 documentary. “Once, because I am a supporter of Planned Parenthood, I got something like 700 death threats in a day. We took that very seriously.”

Interestingly, soon after the Judy Blume documentary was available for streaming on Amazon, the live-action film based on the author’s book, “Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret,” made its debut on the big screen in April 2023. The film stars Rachel McAdams (“Mean Girls,” “The Notebook,” “Wedding Crashers”) and Abby Ryder Fortson (Marvel’s “Ant-Man” and “Ant-Man and the Wasp”).

On Nov. 6, 2023, actor Steve Martin ("Only Murders in the Building," "SNL," the "Father of the Bride" films)  went viral for this post to his 3.2 million followers on Facebook: "So proud to have my book Shopgirl banned in Collier County, Florida! Now people who want to read it will have to buy a copy!" The "Bright Star" creator included a link to purchase his book. Several comments responded about the movie of the same name.

Here’s a list of TV shows, series or movies that are based on books removed from school library shelves in Florida.

'Thirteen Reasons Why' on Netflix

Ten years after Jay Asher's novel "Thirteen Reasons Why" attracted national attention for its explicit content about suicide and sexual assault, the book became a bingewatching series on Netflix in 2017 − and a social media phenomenon.

The book and series are about teenager Hannah Baker (Katherine Langford in the series) who dies by suicide and leaves behind tapes for the people she says are the “reasons” she did it. Katherine Langford stars as Hannah with Dylan Minnette (Marvel’s “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”) as Clay Jensen. The show, which features trigger warnings and contact info for suicide support, aired for four seasons.

Why? Is '13 Reasons Why' more controversial than other depictions of suicide?

"The Diary of Anne Frank" was made into a biographical film in 1959. Like the book, which was posthumously published, "Diary of Anne Frank" covers a young Jewish girl's life in hiding during the Holocaust and World War II. An illustrated adaptation of "The Diary of Anne Frank" was removed from library shelves at one Indian River County school after a parent group complained the book minimalizes the Holocaust and shows the young girl's thoughts about other female bodies, according to TCPalm. "The Diary of Anne Frank," in its original version, remained on the shelves of middle school libraries in Indian River County, TCPalm reported.
