130 works of art by Ottawa County students displayed at TAG this month

PORT CLINTON - The Greater Port Clinton Area Arts Council's The Arts Garage (TAG) is bursting with color in its newest exhibit, more than 100 works of art from Ottawa County students in kindergarten through 12th grade.

Returning for its second year, the Ottawa County Jr. Fair Art Show features about 130 pieces including mixed media, pastels, acrylics, drawing, pen and ink, woven paper, 2D and 3D art. The exhibit runs through Aug. 31.

Keith Fleming, who works in operations at The Arts Garage, was at TAG on Sunday to greet and meet with the young artists and their families in an opening reception.

"I think there are extremely awesome, talented kids in Ottawa County schools, from K-12," Fleming said. "There are several pieces that I would hang in my own home."

Schools participated from across Ottawa County

Participating Schools are: Genoa Elementary and Middle School; Oak Harbor High School and Middle School; St. Boniface School; R.C. Waters Elementary; Port Clinton High and Middle School; Bataan Memorial Intermediate and Primary schools; Immaculate Conception, and Danbury Elementary, Junior and Senior High Schools.

This is the second year the GPCAAC has held the art show, in cooperation with North Point Educational Service Center.

Fleming said the arts council had much thanks to give to North Point for coordinating with the art teachers to gather the pieces and present the show to the public.

"They worked very hard on this," he said.

Sponsors presented ribbons for first through third places

Ribbons were given to first, second and third place at each school, as well as three honorable mentions overall.

"It's pretty cool that everyone gets to see what I made and gets to appreciate it," said Troy Amborski, 12, of Oak Harbor Middle School. He and his family came to see his work hanging on the walls at TAG on Sunday.

"It's nerve-racking but it's cool to see it," Adelyn Simkus, 12, of Oak Harbor Middle School said on Sunday. It was the second year she had participated.

"The show gives families a chance to see their child's artwork and see what the Arts Council does here," Adelyn's mother, Amy Simkus, said.

Show will move to February in 2024

Next year the show will take place during the school year around February so more students are able to visit and see their works, Fleming said.

The Arts Garage is in the city's old maintenance garage at 317 W. Perry St.

Hours are Monday through Sunday from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. or by appointment.
