These 134 NJ towns will participate in 'Click It or Ticket' campaigns

If you’re out on the roads during the next couple of weeks, be sure to buckle up!

From May 22 through June 4, 134 New Jersey law enforcement agencies are participating in the National Highway Traffic Administration’s annual “Click It or Ticket” program. The initiative entails increased national enforcement of seat belt laws and has taken place every May since 2003.

"Click It or Ticket" aims to reduce the number of fatal crashes on the road and promote safety through increased police enforcement of seat belt laws. According to the most recent data from the New Jersey attorney general’s office in 2021, 160 unbelted fatalities happened in New Jersey that year. A total of 47% of all motor vehicle occupant fatalities involved failure to wear a seat belt, according to the attorney general's office.

“Our campaign will help raise awareness of this critical and proven way of preventing serious injury or death in the event of a motor vehicle crash. Seat belts save lives – it’s that simple,” said Attorney General Matthew Platkin.

Last year, law enforcement agencies issued 8,373 seat belt citations, wrote 3,315 speeding summonses, and made 278 impaired driving arrests statewide during the "Click It" program.

New Jersey law requires all drivers and passengers to wear a seat belt. The maximum penalty for a seat belt violation in New Jersey is $46.

The following departments will share a combined $798,350 in grant funding to support the program.
