A 14-year-old boy was arrested on first-degree murder charges after a 74-year-old man was found dead in Kansas on Friday, authorities say.

The Labette County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a shooting at around 1:30 p.m. local time where they found Thaine Lee Anderson with a gunshot wound to the head at his home in Cherryvale, Kansas, the sheriff’s office said in a news release on Facebook on Saturday.

“The preliminary investigation indicates the death is the result of homicide,” the sheriff’s office said in the release.

At about 2 p.m. local time, the sheriff’s office requested assistance from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. KBI agents and the Crime Scene Response Team responded to the scene, the sheriff’s office said. Kansas Wildlife and Parks also assisted with the investigation.

14-year-old suspect found, arrested

During the course of the investigation, the 14-year-old boy was found and arrested on first-degree-murder charges, the sheriff’s office said. He was taken to the Southeast Kansas Regional Juvenile Center in Girard, Kansas.

“The case will be prosecuted by the Labette County Attorney,” the sheriff’s office said. “All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.”

The investigation is ongoing, and no further information was released.
