A 14-year-old boy was shot in the neck in Nashville near South 5th Street; motive uncertain

Nashville police are investigating a 14-year-old boy discovered with a gunshot wound Sunday night behind the 600 block of South 5th Street.

Police from Nashville's East Precinct responded to the call at about 6:15 p.m.

The victim was with two other persons when a black SUV drove up on South 5th, according to the police investigation.

Three males got out of the vehicle and one walked to where the victim and his friends were standing. The three started running, police said.

An individual from the SUV fired several shots toward the 14-year-old before running across South 5th Street and into the James Cayce housing development.

The victim was shot in the neck and is being treated. The youth's condition is uncertain.

The motive for the gunfire isn't known. A suspect has not been identified.
