14-year-old dies after sand hole he was building collapses, Minnesota reports say

A 14-year-old remembered as a “kind and compassionate young man” died days after a sand hole collapsed on top of him, Minnesota reports say.

Hunter Flaxbeard, of Kellogg, Minnesota, was digging a sand tunnel March 28 when he became buried in the sand, according to KAAL and KFGO.

He was taken to a hospital in Rochester, Bring Me The News reported, but he died March 30.

Hunter’s death was ruled an “accidental suffocation,” Wabasha County Sheriff Rodney Bartsh told the Post Bulletin.

An obituary states Hunter was an eighth-grade student at St. John’s Lutheran School in Lake City.

David Zabel, the school’s principal, said Hunter “had a heart of gold,” according to KAAL.

Hunter was passionate about church, according to the obituary, and was a member of Church of Christ in Plainview.

“He was full of adventure and new ideas,” the obituary states. “He loved to sit and have conversations with whoever would engage in his interests. He was very helpful and did his best to please everyone. Hunter was always busy doing something, whether it was inside or outside.”

Kellogg is about 90 miles southeast of Minneapolis.
