14-year-old who injured 6 in Sunday crash had been drinking, police say

A 14-year-old boy who injured six people in a five-car crash on Sunday afternoon in Lincoln had been drinking before the wreck, Delaware State Police said.

Troopers were called to Coastal Highway and Slaughter Beach Road just after 3:30 p.m. for reports of the crash. There, they found several people hurt, though none with life-threatening injuries.

As they investigated, troopers learned that several cars were stopped on the north side of Coastal Highway for flashing red lights, which means that a fire department vehicle is about to enter the road.

That's when a 14-year-old from Newark approached the intersection and failed to stop, crashing into the back of a Honda CR-V. That caused the Honda to be "propelled" into a BMW, police said, which then hit a Toyota Prius.

The Prius then hit a Ford F-150.

The driver of the CR-V, a 58-year-old man from Bethesda, Maryland, was taken to a local hospital by ambulance. His front-seat passenger, a 23-year-old woman also from Bethesda, was also taken to a local hospital by ambulance for "serious but non-life-threatening injuries," police said.

The driver of the BMW and his passenger, both 60-year-old men from Baltimore, were also taken to a hospital by ambulance. The driver of the Prius, a 65-year-old woman from Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, refused medical treatment.

Neither the driver of the F-150 nor his front-seat passenger was injured.

The 14-year-old and his two passengers, a 14- and 16-year-old boy, were taken to a hospital by ambulance for injuries. Police said they found beer bottles outside the truck and "detected alcohol coming from his breath."

He was charged with felony vehicular assault, reckless driving − alcohol-related, driving as a minor after consuming alcohol and several traffic charges.

The five-car crash came a day after two teen boys, both 16, led state police troopers on a chase before ultimately ramming the front of a police vehicle.

According to Delaware State Police, just after midnight Friday night into Saturday, troopers were asked to help Newport police officers who were chasing a stolen vehicle near Bear Christiana Road and Rivers End Drive.

The chase continued onto North Red Lion Road, which ends in a cul-de-sac. There, the driver reversed and rammed the front of a state police Chevrolet Tahoe before driving away.

Police ultimately stopped the car on Ridge Road in Wilmington. The boys got out and ran on foot, but were found by police "hiding in the brush behind a residence on Ridge Road."

They were arrested on a number of charges and taken to the New Castle County Detention Center.
