18 apply for vacant Powell City Council post previously held by Frank Bertone
CORRECTION: An amended list of candidates provided by the city of Powell incorrectly included two names. Jeff Roberts and Regan Koivisto submitted endorsements for an applicant but did not apply for the seat, according to a Sept. 3 email from the city.
Fifteen ‒ make that 18 ‒ Powell residents have met the 5 p.m. Sept. 2 deadline to apply for the vacant City Council seat.
Citing increasing and changing family dynamics, council member Frank Bertone announced his resignation from the panel in mid-August, effective immediately.
Council may choose to interview candidates prior to selecting the new council member.
Per city charter, the person appointed would serve until the next regularly scheduled municipal election, when a successor is to be chosen by voters to complete the remainder of the unexpired term.
Although the process does not have a fixed timetable, the hope is to have the seat filled by the end of September, city spokesperson Rolanda Castle has said.
ThisWeek received an initial 15 candidates Sept. 2, followed by another three shortly afterward.
Castle said Sept. 8 that council still was setting up interviews.
