Hair thinning is one of those things you may not think you have to deal with—until you do. Whether due to aging, over-styling, or other causes, hair thinning is surprisingly common.
“Thinning hair can be due to many reasons and can be categorized into external and internal factors,” Gregga Prothero, master stylist and founder of Gregga LA, explains. “Examples of external causes can be continually wearing too tight of a bun or ponytail when your hair is still wet, choosing the wrong tools that can rip out hair, or having too much buildup that can clog and inflame pores on your scalp.” Internal factors, as you might have guessed, are less in our control. “Examples of internal issues are problems affecting your thyroid, being anemic, stress, certain medications, hormones, or many other underlying symptoms,” says Prothero, who stresses, “It is always good to consult with your doctor about these issues.”
You can try hair-growth supplements to restore volume, but Prothero says choosing the proper shampoo is key. “Using the right shampoo is important, because it helps target some of the problems that can be causing thinning hair or help elevate your hair in areas that thinning is affecting,” the stylist says. “The proper shampoo can help with scalp stimulation—which can help clean out the hair follicles and stop some hair from thinning—to strengthening thinning hair, to making the hair appear fuller.”
So which type of shampoo should you use? “Look for shampoos that say ‘volumizing’ or ‘thickening’ and that contain ingredients like biotin, panthenol, and keratin that help hair feel and look thicker,” she says. To get you started, we’ve rounded up 15 of the best shampoos for thinning hair here.
