The 15 best small towns in SC for 2023, according to Southern Living. Here’s why they’re great

Like most other states, South Carolina has its collection of must-see big cities to visit.

For many, that city is Charleston, a historic area practically dripping with unique Southern charm. Then there’s Columbia, where visitors can enjoy its lively downtown, then head to Williams-Brice Stadium to watch the Gamecocks.

What may be get lesser attention is South Carolina’s collection of small towns. Whether a stopover as part of a road trip or places to visit outright, these hidden gems have something to offer.

The Palmetto State’s small towns have not escaped Southern Living’s notice. The popular magazine recently compiled a list of the 15 best small towns in the state.

Here are the top towns that made the cut.

#1 Beaufort

According Beaufort’s website, the town of 12,960 people is filled with centuries-old, moss-draped live oak trees and has been a destination that has charmed visitors since 1512.

“Get lost among the pines and palmettos of an ancient maritime forest at Hunting Island State Park, catch a striking sunset over Beaufort River, and marvel at the columns and sweeping porches of stately mansions on historic Craven Street,” Southern Living states.

The magazine also suggests visitors try the tomato pie at Lowcountry Produce Kitchen.

#2 Georgetown

Second on the list is Georgetown, a small coastal town with a population of just over 8,000 people. Located about halfway between Myrtle Beach and Charleston, the town is the third oldest in the state, offering plenty of history to explore.

“Stroll among gorgeous old homes and ancient live oaks as you pop into colorful downtown shops and galleries like Indigo Mercantile and The Cottage,” Southern Living states.

#3 Bluffton

From kayaking to biking, hiking and fishing along the May River, there’s plenty of fun adventures to be had in Bluffton.

“Order a dozen on the half-shell at Bluffton Oyster Company, family-owned since 1899. Then, explore the river they were harvested from on a boating trip with May River Excursions,” Southern Living states.

#4 Aiken

Aiken is the real deal when it comes to equestrian activities. Aiken hosts world-class equestrian events and festivals. “Take a walk in Hitchcock Woods, Aiken’s 2,100-acre urban forest, and you will likely see riders on horseback, exploring 70 miles of trails,” Southern Living states.

If that isn’t enough to satisfy you, visit one of Aiken’s many restaurant offerings.

#5 Folly Beach

Folly Beach describes itself as “one of America’s last true beach towns.” Folly Beach is a 12 square-mile barrier island just minutes from historic downtown Charleston. But Folly Beach has plenty of its own things to do and visit, such as “The Porgy House,” a cottage where Charleston authors Dubs and Dorothy Heyward lived in the 1930s.

“You can even learn to surf with lessons from McKevlin’s Surf Shop, or get up close and personal with the Morris Island Lighthouse via a kayak tour,” Southern Living states.
