It’s sandal season (finally!). But before you reach for your usual flats or flip-flops, know this: Wedge sandals are actually healthier for your feet.

Unlike flat sandals, wedges offer more evenly distributed pressure throughout the foot, says Chanel Perkins, D.P.M., a board-certified podiatrist at UTMB Health Internal Medicine in Houston. They also provide better arch support, which will help you avoid knee, hip, and back problems.

And for those that are vertically-challenged, wedges are a great way to elevate your height without the pain of stilettos, adds Casey Ann Pidich, D.P.M., also known as Dr. Glass Slipper, a podiatrist at Park Avenue Podiatry Care in New York City.

That said, not all wedge sandals are created equal. When choosing a new pair, you want to consider the height, material it’s made from, and whether or not it has added features like adjustable straps.

How to shop for comfortable wedge sandals

✔️ Pay attention to heel height: Anything higher than 3 inches puts you at risk for ankle sprains, lower back pain, and knee pain, Dr. Pidich says. For most people, the ideal wedge height is 1 to 2 inches, especially if you’re usually not a heel wearer or if you plan on walking longer distances.

Your natural foot arch can also help you determine the best heel height for you. For example, if you have flat feet, a 1-inch heel might feel the most comfortable. Those with higher arches may be able to go with wedges that are a little taller. No matter what, make sure it has a well-cushioned footbed for maximum comfort.

✔️ Stick with soft or natural fabrics: “Look for natural materials like leather, suede, or cork, as opposed to synthetic options,” Dr. Perkins says. The reason: Soft, natural fabrics allow the shoe’s toe box to stretch and form more comfortably over your feet. This is especially important if you have bunions (a bony bump on your big toe) or hammertoes (a deformity that causes toes to bend or curl downward), Dr. Pidich explains. Natural fabrics also offer better cushioning and shock absorption, which can help stave off painful foot conditions.

✔️ Go for straps: Straps across the forefoot, mid-foot, and/or ankle provide more support for your feet, Dr. Perkins notes. If the straps are adjustable, that’s even better. “This allows you to create a more snug, supportive fit on your foot, if necessary,” Dr. Perkins explains.

Strap material also matters—look for denser materials like leather and thick elastic, which are sturdy, reliable options. Avoid fragile strap materials made from plastic, thin rubber, or foam. Not only are they uncomfortable, but they’re also likely to break.
