15-year-old boy stabbed to death protecting friend at birthday party, CA cops say

A teen has died weeks after police said he was stabbed trying to protect his friend from a fight at a birthday party, media outlets report.

Chula Vista police said Devin Griffiths, 15, was at a party on Jan. 31 when a fight broke out, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune. Police said he was trying to defend his friend when he was stabbed, the Union-Tribune reported.

He suffered “critical injuries” and was taken to a hospital, where he died on Sunday, KGTV reported. Police said he “passed away with his family at his side,” according to the TV station.

The attacking group had “15 young men and some women, believed to be between the ages of 17 and 20,” according to Fox5. Police said the group fled the scene in at least cars, the TV station reported.

A GoFundMe page was created for Devin’s father, who’s a “single dad and his son is his world.” The page has raised over $10,000 so far.

“[Devin] was a Hero and will also be able to carry on by helping others with being a donor,” the page read. “My brother doesn’t want you to cry anymore as Devin is up there in heaven playing football and dancing around with all of the angels that past b4 him.”

Police are asking for anyone with information on people who were involved in the incident to call Chula Vista police at 619-691-5189 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477, according to Fox5.
