"My mom was right about unplugging home appliances when not in use. Low utility bills means more money for me to spend on chai tea lattes and shoes from Zara." --Dana Oliver, Stylelist Beauty Editor Flickr photo by _sarchi
"My mom doesn't believe in worrying about the details when it comes to painting--just wing it! Hence I still have white paint in my hair from painting our lawn furniture two weeks ago." -- Anya Strzemein, Editor, Stylelist, Stylelist Home, Huffington Post Style Flickr photo by Editor B
"My mom was right that I should always have a fully-stocked cabinet of cleaning supplies. You never know what messes will come your way. (Case in point: I had pet odor spray, even though I didn't have a pet... but it came in handy when I was cat-sitting!) --Sarah St. Lifer, Stylelist Associate Editor Flickr photo by peyri
"Always wash your dishes by hand, with gloves on (so your hands don't get dry) and with piping hot water. I learned this after a few former roommates washed dishes with cold water, which left them still somewhat greasy." --Dickson Wong, Stylelist Home Editor Flickr photo by Zayabibu
"My mom firmly believes in the importance of a chair in front of a big window so you can stare out it. She's right--we don't spend enough time staring out windows and it is very therapeutic!" -- Anya Strzemein, Editor, Stylelist, Stylelist Home, Huffington Post Style Flickr photo by blue_is_rad
"Never live in an apartment that faces north, because it's like living in a cave. And you are not a cave person." --Brie Dyas, Senior Editor, Stylelist, Stylelist Home Flickr photo by Grakus Art
"When the bottle of dish detergent or hand soap got to the bottom, my mom would always add a little water to dilute it so it'd last longer. Somehow this didn't wear off on me, because I always put in a huge brimming capful of Tide even when I'm doing a small load of laundry." --Jessica Misener, Huffington Post Style Editor Flickr photo by billaday
"Avoid reheating food in the microwave as much as possible. If you can, use the stovetop -- it tastes much better. And it really does." --Dickson Wong, Stylelist Home Editor Flickr photo by YoAmes
"Best home advice my mom gave me was to always clean up as you cook. That way you aren't left with a sink full of pots and pans when your meal is ready." --Sarah Leon, Stylelist News Editor Flickr photo by stormwarning.
"My mama has revealed to me that plenty of things that appear to require the stove or oven can in fact be made in the microwave. Which is good, because that's the only appliance in my kitchen I know how to use." --Ellie Krupnick, Huffington Post Style Associate News Editor Flickr photo by jmv
"Ironing sheets and tablecloths. When I was younger, I used to think that my mom was crazy for taking the time to do these things, but when I got a home (er, apartment) of my own, I've realized how nice it looks to have pressed linens. Now, my live-in boyfriend thinks I'm crazy for having the impulse to iron the sheets when they come out of the dryer all rumbled, or to smooth out the creases in my tablecloth before putting it on (especially if we're having company). I guess it's true that we all grow up and turn into our mothers!" --Natasha Burton, Staff Writer, HuffPost Weddings & HuffPost Divorce Flickr photo by Dinner Series
"Mom taught me that you can (should!) do your hand-washing laundry (bras, tights, swimsuits, etc) with dish detergent. It's good at cutting grease, making it super strong on clothes." --Ellie Krupnick, Huffington Post Style Associate News Editor Flickr photo by kickthebeat
"When I complained to my mom during my first year of college about how I couldn't seem to keep my floors clean, she actually had to tell me that you have to move furniture and clean underneath to get rid of all of the dust. My cluelessness may possibly have been the true mark of a spoiled brat..." --Rebecca Adams, Stylelist Intern Flickr photo by nist6ss
"Use Windex on everything. It even works to get a ring off a swollen finger. (Mom wasn't much of a housekeeper, but she did like to try on rings.) --Ann Brenoff, Senior Writer Flickr photo by DebMomOf3

"My mom also told me to never buy something for the house unless I absolutely had to-- chances are I can fashion it out of other stuff I had lying around." --Anya Strzemien, Editor, Stylelist, Stylelist Home, Huffington Post Style Photo by Anya Strzemien
