150 Florida lineman put their skills to the test in this year’s competition

Electric utility linemen across the state performed at the 2023 Florida Lineman Competition.

The 150 linemen, including 23 from Orlando Utilities Commission, showed off their skills and knowledge through activities and exercises.

The event took place in a field near the Marriot Orlando Airport Lakeside.

Florida Municipal Electric Association hosted the event, where workers competed in a speed climb, cross-arm change-out and hurt-man rescue.

This year, there was a new mutual aid portion where two apprentices and one journeyman worked together.

The competition began in 2001 to celebrate the men and women who risk their lives to give power to communities.

“Not only does this annual event give lineworkers a chance to provide the public with a glimpse into their daily work lives, but it is also an opportunity for professional development, recognition and camaraderie,” said Amy Zubaly, FMEA Executive Director.
