$150 million project: Progress continues on JEA’s first new water-reclamation facility in Jacksonville in 45 years

A massive new water-reclamation plant is being constructed near the eTown development on the Southside.

Jacksonville building officials recently approved nearly 20 permits for about $42.2 million worth of work on the $150 million overall JEA project at 11458 Apex Trail.

The Greenland Water Reclamation Facility will not only serve residents and businesses within the expanding eTown master-planned community but areas outside the complex as well. The facility itself is outside the actual eTown boundaries.

“The facility will be JEA’s first new water reclamation facility in 45 years in Duval County and JEA currently operates 11 of them,” said Karen McAllister, JEA media relations manager.

The sight near Florida 9B and the existing Greenland Energy Center. Once operational, the plant will initially handle about 4 million gallons of water per day with the capacity for as much as 12 million gallons a day. Initially, an estimated 22,800 customers will be served by the reclamation operations while that number will increase as more homes and businesses are built.

The state-of-the-art facility will be designed for zero wastewater discharge. This means all wastewater will be disinfected and distributed right back into the reuse system, as opposed to being discharged into natural wetlands or into the St. Johns River, according to JEA.

The Haskell Co. is the contractor that will handle the initial construction. The facility is projected to be fully operational in November 2024.

Popular Target store to get makeover

A busy Target retail store in the Regency area of Jacksonville is about to undergo a facelift.

Alterations and repairs will soon get underway at the Target at 444 Monument Road, according to building permits approved by the city.

The work will cost about $1.8 million and cover about 129,451 square feet of space in the store. It will include minor demolition to some areas. But most of the upgrades will feature replacements and the additions of finishes to the retail building.

Groom Construction Co. Inc. is the contractor.

UF and spine center to get more work

Another phase of construction is coming to a University of Florida surgery center on Jacksonville’s Southside.

UF Health has already spent $25 million on the facility in partnership with Jax Spine & Pain Centers at 5191 First Coast Technical Parkway.

Construction got underway more than a year ago near the University of North Florida at Butler Boulevard. But an additional permit amounting to $3.6 million was approved in April by city building officials.

The latest permit is for a structural steel buildout area at the facility to be handled by contractor Dana B. Kenyon Co.

The multi-surgery facility has been billed as the "largest multispecialty freestanding ambulatory surgery center on the First Coast."

It will house the Centurion Surgery Center on the first floor, UF Health medical practices on the second and Jax Spine & Pain Center on the third floor, according to Florida Times-Union archives. /
