$350 prize offered in Black history contest

The Oak Ridge/Anderson County NAACP is seeking middle and high school student entries from Oak Ridge and Clinton for its Black History Month competition.

Since the contest was announced in The Oak Ridger earlier this month, the deadline has been extended and the monetary prize amounts increased.

The deadline has been extended to April 3, so that all Oak Ridge middle (6-8) and high (9-12) school youths can turn their submissions into their respective principals at Oak Ridge and Anderson County middle and high schools after returning from spring break.

The Education Committee of the Oak Ridge-Anderson County NAACP Branch is sponsoring this contest and the prizes have been increased as well. Winners will be awarded the following: 1st Place Winner $350, 2nd Place Winner $200 and Third Place $100.

The theme of the contest is "How would you create a curriculum to include the Scarboro 85 or Clinton 12 in the school system?" It could be a podcast, lesson plan or creative art or dramatization (like a mural or play).

The following should be included in the package:

  • Cover page with name, school, teacher, grade, telephone number, and email address.

  • An outline of your creation with references cited.

For a list of resources, contact Rose Weaver, NAACP education chair, at rs_wvr@yahoo.com or call her at (865) 924-2987.

Submit to your principal or Youth Coordinator contact at your church by April 3.

First-place winners will be required to present their submission at the April 25 NAACP monthly general membership meeting, which may be a Zoom meeting.
