15th annual Book Bag Drive-Thru Giveaway slated Saturday

Jul. 23—Community events are on tap for this weekend in Milledgeville, each benefitting local students.

One of the Saturday events is the 15th annual Book Bag Drive-Thru Giveaway from 10 a.m. until noon at Five-Star Dodge and Toyota in Milledgeville.

It will consist of mesh and clear book bags being giveaway by Tracey Harper, who has been involved in community projects helping others in the area for close to 20 years.

Each vehicle will receive up to three book bags. If there are three children or more in a vehicle, each one will receive a book bag, Harper said.

The event will last until the 1,500 book bags have been giveaway, Harper said.

"The book bag giveaway wouldn't be possible without sponsorship from Five-Star Dodge and Toyota and Primecare Home Care Service," Harper said.

A separate event on Saturday from 2 until 5 p.m., will be held at TH Community Service, located at 931 N. Columbia St. in Milledgeville.

During that event, Harper said she will also give away two $1,000 scholarships and 20 $500 scholarships.

Students are required to bring proof of their acceptance into a college, Harper said.

"It's going to be a time to come out and celebrate the return of students who have just graduated from high school and are now planning to continue their educational pursuits on the college level," Harper said.

This year's sponsors of these community events include: All Credit Sale & Rental, Accurate Adance Tax Service, Team Calvary 19/LLC, JJF Express, LLC, Melvin Cleavland, Rich Logistics & Disposal, Walmart of Milledgeville, Quality Brothers, Miller Trucking Co., LLC, Beyond Bronzed & Tanning, Primecare Home Care Service, Bizzy Bee's Childcare Learning Center, The Father's House International Ministries, Miller Plaza Learning Center, and Overtyme Bar & Grill.

Another event is slated from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. Local educator Carla Ingram, a Spanish teacher at Baldwin High School, will be at Huley Park in Milledgeville giving away school supplies. Vendors will also be on hand and between 300 and 400 bookbags as well as scholarships will be given away.
