16-year-old charged with murder in Bronx subway shooting
NEW YORK -- A 16-year-old is now charged with murder in Monday's deadly shooting on a Bronx subway platform.
Police say the teen was also charged with five counts of attempted murder and one count of criminal possession of a weapon. He will be charged as an adult, but his name is not being released because he is a minor.
We're told he didn't make any statements to police and asked for an attorney.
Thirty-five-year-old Obed Beltran Sanchez, an innocent bystander and a father of two from Mexico, was killed in the shooting at the Mount Eden subway station in the Bronx.
His wife said in Spanish that day was their 14-year anniversary. She says he was a great father and great husband, their love unconditional.
Now charged with his murder, a 16-year-old alleged gang member taken into custody outside his Bronx home, where police could still be seen Thursday night. U.S. Marshals says he was previously arrested in April 2023 for attempted robbery.
Police say the teen and two others opened fire during a gang dispute on the subway platform during Monday's rush hour.
"It's ridiculous. I don't understand these kids nowadays. What are they doing? What are they thinking?" East Harlem resident John Melecio said.
Five others were also hurt in the crossfire, including a 14-year-old who is in custody. Police say that teen was involved in a shooting in January that may have led to the subway gunfight. He was charged Wednesday with attempted murder, assault and reckless endangerment for last month's shooting, and he's now being questioned about Monday's subway shooting.
Leo Mendez was nearby when it happened.
"It's like normal ... Basically," he said.
Police sources tell CBS New York cops are investigating five separate shootings and shots-fired incidents over the past few weeks involving this ongoing beef over disrespect and social media drill rap. Police are still searching for one other person believed to be the third gunman in Monday's shootout.
"We need to definitely make people more aware of how the youth is thinking when it comes to quickly turning to violence," Mount Eden resident Daniel Del Moral said.
"Gang violence such as this senseless shooting resulting in death and injury to innocent citizens of the City of New York waiting for their train to get home will not be tolerated. We will use all the resources at our disposal to find you and bring you to justice to make our streets safe again," U.S. Marshal Ralph Sozio said.
