22 Topeka-area tennis players competed at the state tournament. Here's how they finished

22 Topeka-area boys tennis players were in action as the Kansas State High School Activities Association spring sports state tournament season began.

Eleven of them, four from Hayden, four from Topeka West and three from Washburn Rural, made it to day two, with all of them earning state placements.

Of the five local teams; Topeka West placed second in 5A, Hayden placed third in 4A, Washburn Rural placed seventh in 6A, Shawnee Heights placed 16th in 5A and Seaman placed 18th in 5A with Topeka West juniors Miles and Ian Cusick winning a 5A doubles state title.

Here's how all the Topeka-area athletes fared at the state tournament.

Singles

Senior Tyler Broxterman won his first match against Abilene senior Cayden West (7-6, 6-1), lost his second to Labette County senior Chase Carnahan (6-7 (5), 6-4 (7), won his third against Towanda Circle senior Daniel Webb (9-1) and lost his fourth to McPherson senior Ayden Johnson (9-5).

Senior Drew Morgan lost his first match to El Dorado senior Hayden Green (6-0, 6-0) and his second to Winfield senior Leo Pedrosa (9-3).

Doubles

​​​​​​Senior Michael Sandstrom and junior Gus Glotzbach (who had a first-round bye) won their first match over Winfield senior PJ Morris and junior Noah Heger (6-2, 6-1), won their second over Independence junior Easton Morris and sophomore Aiden Denney (6-4, 6-1), won their third over Chanute seniors Hayden Newton and Kaidan Frederick (7-6 (5), 6-3), but lost their state title match to Independence senior Brecken Bertie and sophomore Camdon Julian (6-1, 6-3).

Sandstrom and Glotzbach finished second in 4A doubles.

Senior Patrick Gorman and sophomore Joseph Luke (who had a first round bye) lost their first match to Winfield freshman Jackson Davis and Adam Everett (6-2, 6-4 (4)), won their second over Clay Center senior Brock Ferguson and sophomore Taige Pfizenmaier (9-5), won their third over Hayden juniors Banks Hinshaw and Jack Wright (9-4), won their fourth over Independence junior Easton Morris and sophomore Aiden Denney (9-7), lost their fifth to Wellington seniors Justin Norris and Carson Rademacher (9-3) and won seventh place match over Winfield freshman Jackson Davis and Adam Everett (9-5).

Gorman and Luke finished seventh in 4A doubles.

Sophomore James Maag: First round bye, lost first match to Blue Valley Southwest sophomore Sanjay Rajkumar (6-1, 6-1), won second match over Great Bend junior Brendyn Schroeder (9-0), lost third match Kapaun Mt. Carmel senior Trevor Sweat (9-0).

Sophomore Caden McGee: Lost first match to Goddard Eisenhower freshman Kyle King (6-0, 6-0), lost second match to Kapaun Mt. Carmel senior Trevor Sweat (9-1).

Senior Jaden Rodriguez lost his first match to Maize South sophomore Logan Garrison (6-3, 7-5), won his second over Leavenworth Freshman Jack Harris (9-7) and lost his third to Emporia senior Brenden Kienholz (9-0).

Juniors Miles and Ian Cusick (who received first-round bye) won their first match over Kapaun Mt. Carmel seniors Gavin Bhargava and Johnathan McIlvain (6-3, 6-3), won their second over Maize South freshman Hudson Grizzell and senior Noah Rodriguez (6-0, 6-1), won their third over Salina Central seniors Collin and Connor Phelps (6-1, 7-5) and won state title over Maize South senior Grayson Wright and junior Mitchell Krumm (6-3, 6-2).

Miles and Ian Cusick won the 5A doubles state title.

Junior Carter Cool and senior Gavin Chavez (who received a first-round bye) lost their first match to Ark City sophomore Oakley O'Donnell and freshman Dawson O'Donnell (6-2, 6-4), won their second over Spring Hill senior Derek Funkhouser and junior Connor Rodenbeck (9-0), won their third over Blue Valley Southwest sophomore Emmett Wirth and junior Jedrick Wilson, won their fourth over Maize South freshman Hudson Grizzell and senior Noah Rodriguez (9-4), won their fifth over Andover Central senior Seth Newton and junior Blake Wilson (9-6) and lost their fifth match to Newton juniors Justin Franz and Otis Musser.

Cool and Chavez finished sixth in 5A doubles.

Seniors Christian and Garrison Johnson won their first match over Spring Hill senior Derek Funkhouser and junior Connor Rodenbeck (6-0, 7-5), lost their second to Newton juniors Justin Franz and Otis Musser (6-1, 6-2) and lost their third to Maize seniors Gavin Metz and Austin Rey (9-7).

Senior Mason Thieu (who received a first-round bye) lost his first match to Blue Valley Northwest senior Alex Mojica (4-6, 6-3, 10-3), won his second over Haysville Campus junior Ryan Nguyen (9-3), won his third over Haysville Campus junior Jacob Bush (9-2), lost his fourth Shawnee Mission South senior Peyton Peck and lost his eleventh place match to Garden City junior Logen Morren.

Thieu finished twelfth in 6A singles.

Junior Mason Casebeer (who received a first-round bye) lost his first match to Blue Valley West freshman Francisco Landeras (6-1, 6-0), won his second over Wichita West senior Isaiah Crabtree (9-3) and lost his third to Garden Center junior Logan Morren (9-8).

Seniors Nick Luetje and Kyler Knutson (who receive a first-round bye) lost their first match to Blue Valley senior George Perkins junior Caden Myers (3-6, 6-3, 10-8), won their second over Manhattan sophomore Drake Karr and senior Jackson Ivester (9-2), won their third over Derby senior Alex Hedden and junior Colby Hedden (9-2), lost their fourth to Blue Valley seniors Tyson Lavid and Landon Menees (9-7), lost their fifth to Blue Valley West senior Delvin Ko and David Han (9-3) and won their eleventh place match over Derby senior Scott Simmons and junior Isaak L. Bowman.

Luetje and Knutson finished eleventh in 6A doubles

Seniors Jiyoon Park & Zach Willingham lost their first match to Shawnee Mission East freshman Jake Hanson and sophomore George Kahl (6-3, 6-2) and lost their second match to Derby senior Scott Simmons and junior Isaak L. Bowman
