This really is wearable technology. [Photo: Nervous System]

The Kinematic Petals Dress is made of over 1,600 pieces connected by 2,600 hinges, yet “emerges from the 3D printer fully assembled and ready to wear”. Wowzers.

The garment is made using Kinematics: “a system for 4D printing that creates complex, foldable forms composed of articulated modules.”

Pretty impressive, isn’t it? [Photos: Nervous System]

Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts commissioned design studio, Nervous System, to create the dress for their exhibition #techstyle which “explores the synergy between fashion and technology and how it is not only changing the way designers design, but also the way people interact with their clothing.”

The dress is customisable to the wearer’s body using 3D scanning. Elements such as direction, length and shape can also be varied.

The US-based company was founded by Jessica Rosenkranz and Jesse Louis-Rosenberg. The MIT graduates describe their business as “a generative design studio that works at the intersection of science, art, and technology.”

Unfortunately the dress isn’t for sale. However, the company do have a range of jewellery, lighting and houseware available to buy here.
