17-year-old arrested in connection with bomb threat message to Ottawa University

A 17-year-old was arrested on Thursday in connection with a bomb threat to Ottawa University, according to the Surprise Police Department.

The teen was booked into the Maricopa County Durango Juvenile Detention Center and charged with 1 count of Interference with or disruption of an education institution, and 1 count of making a terrorist threat, police said.

At around 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Ottawa University received a text message indicating there was a bomb on campus. Police then responded to the school and assisted in evacuating all staff and students off campus, SPD said.

Police said that K-9 officers from multiple agencies responded as well and conducted a sweep on the entire campus. They found no explosive devices, deeming that the campus was safe.

An investigation later revealed that the bomb threat message was sent from a 17-year-old Casa Grande resident. The teen was then taken into custody, with the help of the Casa Grande Police Department.

Police said that the teen admitted to detectives that he sent the bomb threat message.
