This 17-year-old cat ‘roams free and people watches’ on Washington’s ferries

The Puget Sound region has a proud history of pets riding public transit, and 17-year-old cat and regular ferry rider Betty is no exception.

Betty’s owner is Everett Herald reporter Andrea Brown, who told the ferry service that she used to keep Betty in a pet carrier in her car during sailings. Betty took issue with that approach, and after she “meowed nonstop,” was let out to wander and people-watch moving forward.

Today, she’s ridden the ferry “up to a hundred times” over the last two years of adventures across the water with her owner.
