17-year-old is fatally shot waiting to pick up girlfriend at school, Texas cops say

A teenager was shot to death outside of a Texas high school while waiting to pick up his girlfriend, authorities say.

The boy, identified as 17-year-old Jake Mason, was outside Cypress Lakes High School, in Katy, when someone gunned him down on Tuesday, Dec. 19, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said on X, formerly Twitter.

Investigators say Mason was with a group of “unidentified males” when a fight broke out. A male wearing all black pulled out a gun and opened fire on Mason, then ran from the scene, Gonzalez said.

The high school and two elementary schools went into lockdown, the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District said on social media.

Several people were taken into custody, some of whom are from the high school, KTRK reported.

Police are searching for the gunman, according to Gonzalez.

Officials haven’t said what may have motivated the shooting, but an investigation is underway.

McClatchy News reached out to the school district for comment on Dec. 20 but did not immediately receive a response.

Katy is roughly 30 miles west of Houston.
