2 teen brothers killed in Paulding County house fire

Fire officials said teen brothers are dead after a fire broke out at a Paulding County home.

On Friday afternoon around 3:30 p.m., state fire marshals arrived at the scene of a house fire on Baskin Road in Paulding County.

They started their investigation into a fire that claimed the lives of two teenage brothers.

News Chopper 2 flew over the scene as firefighters worked to put out hot spots.

Channel 2′s Veronica Griffin talked to neighbor Curtis Lewis, who lives across the street. He said he rushed over to the burning house but did not enter because the flames were too intense.

“That’s way too early to die in life. I lost a grandchild the same way,” said Lewis.

A woman who arrived on the scene several hours after the fire was out stated off camera that she used to live in the home with her family, and that she loved the two boys as if they were her own.

Fire crews entered the home from a back window, where they found both victims upstairs.

According the Paulding County Coroner, the victim’s names are Robert Deaton, 17, and Caleb Deaton, 13.

Investigators say the boys were home alone.

A 17-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene, and a 13-year-old was taken to Tanner Medical Center where he later died from his injuries.

Fire chief Joey Pelfrey, a father himself, told Channel 2 that the loss of life in the fire affects the entire community.

“It rips you apart. It rips this whole community apart that something like this happened,” said Pelfrey.
