11 freebies and discounts in Austin for Teacher Appreciation Week

Teacher Appreciation Week starts Monday, and to celebrate, several businesses across Austin are offering special deals to educators.

The week began as a singular day back in the 1980s after lobbying from the National Education Association and the Kansas and Indiana State Boards of Education. March 7 served as National Teacher Day until the National Parent Teacher Association moved it to May in 1984 and made it a week-long celebration.

This year's Teacher Appreciation Week is observed Monday, May 8 through Friday, May 12.

Here's where teachers can enjoy freebies and discounts, from food to merchandise:

Costco

After buying a membership, teachers will receive a $20 Costco gift card year-round.

Michaels

Teachers can enjoy 15% off both online and in-store year-round.

Pluckers Wing Bar

Teachers can enjoy one free appetizer at all Pluckers locations every Friday.

Headspace

This meditation and mindfulness app offers a free year of access to teachers year-round.

Reebok

The shoe and sporting goods store offer teachers up to 50% off online year-round.

Apple

The tech company offers teachers education pricing on iPads and computers with a school ID year-round.

Whataburger

Teachers can enjoy one free breakfast entrée from 5-9 a.m. throughout May 8-12.

Office Depot and OfficeMax

Teachers with a rewards membership, which is free, can earn 30% back in bonus rewards for certain in-store purchases with an online coupon and school ID. The deal ends July 1.

Firehouse Subs

With the purchase of any medium or large sub, chips and drink until May 12, the sandwich shop will offer teachers a free medium sub.

McAlister's Deli

Teachers with a school ID can receive a free 32-ounce tea until May 10.

Potbelly Sandwich Shop

The shop is offering teachers with a school ID a free cookie or regular-sized soft drink with the purchase of an entree until May 10.
